Solar Panels FAQ
How do solar panels work?
Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Panels supplied by GreenPower
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) modules are an integral part of the energy system because they are the element that create electricity from sunlight.
Quality Solar Panels will generate electricity for 40+ years, and be able to withstanding extreme weather conditions, including hail, storms, extreme heat and cold. There are many types of panels of various quality and price, which offer differing degrees of performance, longevity, and reputation. Read More
What are the best solar panels available?
Different types of Solar Panels available
Not all panels perform the same, and not all panels are priced equally. Quality solar panels from SunPower for example, will last 40+ years, while a cheap Tier 3 panel may only last 1-2 years, even though they come with a 25 year warranty. It is worth noting that solar panels are designed and engineered to survive and operate over 25+ years of extreme weather conditions, however, the competitive solar market has put enormous pressure on solar manufacturers to reduce costs, and in some cases, this results in cutting corners during the manufacturing process, by either dropping quality control standards, using lesser quality materials or even rebranding cheaper panels, hoping they will last the distance. How long will solar panels last?
Solar Panel warranty for degredation and performance guarantees
A solar array must be able to withstand the most extreme climatic conditions, such as torrential rain and hail, fierce winds, ice and snow and extreme heat. Quality brands can honor their solar panel warranty & guarantees, and only the best solar panels can withstand conditions year after year for over 40 years. There are only a handful of solar panels that have passed the TÜV Rheinland’s Long-Term Sequential Test, which included Temperature Cycling, Dynamic Mechanical Load, Humidity Freeze, Damp Heat, and two Potential Induced Degradation Tests – both Positive and Negative, while observing power degradation performance of the solar modules. Kyocera Solar panels were the first panel to pass the rigorous TÜV Rheinland’s Long-Term Sequential Test in 2010, followed by SunPower and Q.Cells, all of which are in our high class range. Read More
How much electricity will a solar power system produce?
Solar Electricity Generation through out Australia
The solar electricity generation of a solar pv system will vary depending on the geographic location and configuration of the array. Performance is also determined by the quality of solar panels and inverter efficiencies, the orientation and design of the array, shading and soiling issues. The northern parts of Australia (Zone 1) has more solar irradiance than the southern parts of Australia (zone 4) and will subsequently generate approximately 27% more solar electricity per kWp of solar panels installed. What is the performance of solar panels?
Solar Panel Performance and technological advancements
The Green Power Company have a focus on using quality solar equipment from manufacturers that can demonstrate a proven history of performance and product research and development. Manufacturer financial stability along with a local Australian presence is vital for the long-term sustainability of solar equipment sold into the market.
People often ask about technological improvements in regard to solar panel performance, and we find that each year, solar panel efficiency increases by about 1%. Solar panel performance is tested under standard test conditions (STC), with a solar irradiance of 1,000 W/m² with the panel temperature at 25°C and solar spectrum of AM 1.5. Read More
Hail Resistance & Solar Warranty
Most solar panels come with a 25 year warranty, but not all panels can honor the solar warranty. It is important to use reputable solar brands that have a proven history of performance and stringent quality control procedures.
To pass Australian standards, solar panels must be able to withstand direct impact of hail stones with a diameter of 35mm or approximately the size of a golf ball.
The toughened glass of the solar module should hold its integrity, however the crystalline cells may suffer hairline fracturing which may affect performance. Certain manufacturers like SunPower can limit the damage of hairline fractures by coating the back of their cells with a copper/tin alloy which increases strength, performance and longevity. - Solar panels absorb radiant sunlight – reducing internal building temperatures. Read More
How does tilt and orientation affect the performance of solar panels?
How generation performance affected by the tilt and azimuth of the panels
Designing a solar power system properly will impact considerably on the performance of the system. Both tilt and orientation of the solar panels can have a dramatic affect on the solar electricity generation capacity, however, this is not the only important consideration when it comes to designing a solar power system. Other important factors include shading, system configuration and electrical wiring can play an important part in the system generation. If panels are facing different directions, or tilted at different angles, it is highly recommended to use multi power point tracking (MPPT) equipment and electrical configuration. If there are more than two tilt angles and more than 2 azimuths of the solar panels, or shading issues, it is recommended to use micro-inverters. Read More
Reverse Current in Solar Panels
SOLAR PANELS REVERSE CURRENT ISSUES
Green Power operate a dedicated solar service and maintenance division, which often finds electrical faults in PV systems. In some circumstances, these electrical faults in solar panels lead to current being forced in the wrong direction through a string of PV modules. All solar PV panels are designed to withstand a certain degree of reverse current without damage occurring to the modules. For Q CELLS, this protection allows for up to 20A reverse current. For most other panels, this protection is only up to 15A. Read More
Solar Power Prices?
How much is a solar power system?
Solar Prices for Supply and Installation
The Green Power Company can offer a range of solar power systems at differing prices.
Some of the factors that affect the price of an installed solar power system are;
- Solar Panel Choice – For example, SunPower solar panels cost approximately 3 times more per Watt than budget manufactured panels.
- Inverter Choice – Again, quality European made inverters cost more than double the price of budget inverters and are engineered to last 20+ years with increased efficiency and functionality.
- Electrical Kits – Quality electrical kits cost approximately 3 times more than a budget electrical kits, and will prevent system breakdowns and reduce fire hazards. Read More
